IB Programme

The IB consists of four separate but inter-related core programmes, aligned with learners' developmental stages, including a careers programme.

Learners aged 3 to 12 years will embark on the IB Primary Years Programme, or PYP. This is followed by the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (IBDP). The IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) is a unique, tailored pathway for high schoolers looking to further their studies with a career-oriented learning approach.

PYP a Monza

PYP

The PYP aims to develop caring, culturally aware students, fully engaged in their own learning journey. At the core of the PYP is a conception of the child as inquirer: learners take ownership of their studies, building confidence, understanding and self-motivation. Learning is relevant, challenging and engaging. In the early years here at ISM, this programme is blended with the world-renowned Reggio Emilia approach to maximise outcomes.

MYP a Monza e Brianza

MYP

During the five-year MYP, learners are challenged to draw links between classroom learning and the wider world. It is a broad, balanced programme that consists of eight subject groups and is carefully tailored for ages 11 to 16. Upon finishing the MYP, learners are well-equipped to take on either the IBDP or IBCP pathway.

In the final year (Year 11), students have the option to take eAssessments, which include on-screen examinations in subjects like Mathematics, Sciences, and Humanities, alongside coursework components such as the ePortfolio and the Personal Project. These assessments emphasise conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary connections, providing an internationally recognised qualification that supports a smooth transition into further education.

IBDP a Monza e Brianza

IBDP

The IBDP marks the conclusion of IB study. The aim of this programme is to extend learners’ knowledge while laying the foundation for a thriving life. It does this by nurturing invaluable competencies, from research to reflection, community service and more. As a consequence, learners are motivated to succeed holistically – in academics as well as in their physical, emotional and ethical development. Learners aged 16 to 19 may be eligible.

The two-year programme provides a broad yet challenging academic curriculum, with students studying six subjects across disciplines such as languages, sciences, mathematics, humanities, and the arts. At least three of these are taken at a higher level. Beyond coursework, students complete three core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), which enhances critical thinking; the Extended Essay (EE), an independent research project; and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), which fosters personal growth and community engagement. The IBDP is internationally recognised and equips students with the skills and knowledge needed for success in higher education and beyond.

IB Career-related Programme (IBCP)

IS Monza is a candidate school* for the IB Career-related Programme (IBCP). The IBCP provides students aged 16 to 19 with a rigorous career-related secondary education. Excellence in academics is still emphasised, and learners must take at least two DP courses; however, learners will broaden their studies by adopting a career-oriented approach to learning and applying the theory of knowledge to the real world.

In addition to their chosen DP courses, students follow a specialised career pathway and complete the IBCP core, which focuses on both professional and personal development. This core includes community engagement, a reflective project, language and cultural studies as well as personal and professional skills. Overall the IBCP prepares students for life beyond school both in further studies or the world of work and fosters critical thinking, global awareness, and ethical decision-making.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (IBCP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.

What the IB Organization Says About IS Monza

The IB Organization has commended IS Monza for our impeccable application of the IB programmes, referring specifically to our excellent teaching and learning provision, innovative learning facilities and commitment to fostering the skills for the future.

IB Learner Profile

The IB is concerned with a holistic education that cultivates the elements of the IB Learner Profile. The goal of the IB programmes is to help students become: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. These 10 attributes show how crucial it is to promote learners’ curiosity and compassion, in addition to their knowledge and academic skills, while fostering their social, physical and emotional wellbeing.

What Is the IB Career-Related Programme?

The IBCP framework is an excellent opportunity for students to prepare for future studies and career growth. It is a rigorous study programme that combines IBDP courses with a unique core course to develop specific skills, habits, attitudes and qualities needed to pursue their dream career, embedding and reinforcing skills that serve them for years to come. The flexibility afforded by the IBCP means that local differences are accounted for too.

What Are the Uses of the IB Diploma?

Those who complete the IBDP are awarded the prestigious IB Diploma. Since the IB is internationally recognised, learners may use it to enter universities the world over, including highly competitive schools in Italy and overseas. Successful completion of the IBDP shows that the learner is well-prepared for university and can flourish in numerous disciplines owing to their hard work, discipline and perseverance.

IB Assessments

Learners are assessed throughout the IB continuum, in the PYP, MYP and IBDP stages. The purpose of IB assessments is to determine whether a student has reached the appropriate learning objectives and may proceed to the subsequent level (or in the case of the IBDP, be awarded the IB Diploma certificate). Exams will be marked by assessors from the IB Organization. The top score achievable for the IBDP is 45.

Who is eligible for the International Baccalaureate?

The IB education system is for any learner who enjoys being challenged academically, has a thirst for knowledge and wishes to unlock their full potential.
